Tuesday Under Ten: Victor Brauner

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. Usually my aim is to support emerging artists and young galleries, but it’s auction week in New York, so here’s a cutie from Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper sale by Victor Brauner. There’s lots of under $10,000 material in this auction, but don’t forget to include the Buyer’s Premium in your calculations!

Tuesday Under Ten: Matthew Chambers

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week, Christie's is auctioning off a group of work from the Saatchi Gallery's Collection with both an online auction (live through Friday) and an in-person sale on Thursday that includes this bright and colorful -- and TALL -- painting (with an intriguing title - see caption below) by Matthew Chambers. There's lots of under $10,000 material and, even better, all proceeds go to benefit the gallery’s tuition-free educational programs and free admission.

Tuesday Under Ten: The Paul F. Walter Collection

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: On September 26 and 27, Christie's is auctioning off the truly fascinating and eclectic collection of Paul F. Walter (you guys, there's a sterling silver rocking chair wine bottle holder!), and there are plenty of both fine and decorative art pieces in the under $10,000 category. Browsing this collection is a genuine thrill. If you're interested in bidding and would like to take a look with me in person, the preview opens on Friday. As Walter once said, "I don’t think you learn anything unless you buy. It is about commitment, passion, testing one’s own judgement." Here ones of my favorites from the collection:

Tuesday Under Ten: John Baldessari

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: Christie's has a fun online editions auction starting today that includes this cute Baldessari piece with an estimate of $2,000 - 3,000 and lots of other Under Ten work! If you're interested in something and would like to discuss bidding, please get in touch!

Tuesday Under Ten: Kour Pour

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: Kour Pour's paintings are meticulous recreations of specific carpets in vivid detail. I would love to own a full size one of these, but someone will be very lucky to take home this petite beauty with an estimate at $5,000 - 7,000 from Christie's upcoming online Contemporary sale. At just over 9 x 7 inches, it's a little gem with all of the detail of his larger work. Lots of other "under ten" beauties in this auction as well! There will be a preview opening soon. Please get in touch if you're interested in taking a look with me!

Weekend Agenda: Editions Auctions Previews I

In anticipation of the auctions on April 18th, 19th, and 20th, the editions previews are up at Phillips and Christie's this weekend. In this context, editioned work can be anything except photography that's produced in multiples. Most of the pieces included in these sales are works on paper made with a printing technique such as screenprinting or lithography. However, these auctions also include three-dimensional sculpture! Sometimes my clients initially don't like the idea of a work that isn't unique, but they usually come around when I explain that this has nothing to do with posters. These pieces are produced in small numbers, often under the direction of the artist and always by a fine art printer. Buying editioned work is a great way to get something more affordable by a "blue chip" artist. Here are a few favorites from the upcoming sales. I have included the auction estimates in the captions to give you a sense of prices. If you would like to consider buying an editioned piece for your home, I would be happy to visit the previews with you this weekend. Sotheby's sale is a week later than Christie's and Phillips, so stay tuned for more next Thursday!

I love Christie's biannual Living with Art auctions! If you want to decorate your home in a traditional style or just mix in a few antiques, this is the place to look. The preview opens tomorrow and stays on view until the sales on March 28th and 29th. Here are a few of my favs! (Does anyone want to go in on the bird pictures with me? I don't really need all 22!)

Tuesday Under Ten: April Photography Auctions

The first week in April is photography week! AIPAD -- a photography art fair will be on Pier 92 and 94, and there will be a series of photography auctions at Christie's, Phillips, and Sotheby's. I LOVE black and white gallery walls, particularly when they include interesting, old photos! If you're thinking of building a gallery wall for your home, photography week is the absolute best time to get started. Here are two awesome and well-priced picks from the photography auctions, and there will be so much more material to paw through at AIPAD. If you're interested in looking at auction or visiting the fair with me, please get in touch to make a date!

Tuesday Under Ten: Roy Lichtenstein

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: I love Lichtenstein in general, and his more abstract brushstroke work in particular. His paintings are pricey, but screenprints were an important part of his artistic practice, and smaller ones like this are sometimes affordable at auction -- but don’t forget the 25% buyer’s premium! This beauty will be on the block tomorrow at Christie’s. Please get in touch if you’re interested in bidding, and we can have this on your wall in no time!

Weekend Agenda: Mid-Season Auction Previews

The mid-season Contemporary auctions are next week! Which means this weekend there are awesome auction previews at all three of New York’s major auction houses: Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s. The mid-season auctions – in comparison to their big sibs in May – tend to be a bit more mellow and have more sleepers. If you’d like to consider bidding on a piece at auction, it would be my pleasure to tour some previews with you this weekend. Please get in touch! Here’s just a quick glimpse!

Tuesday Under Ten: Gabriel Alix

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: I am so enchanted by the bright colors and bold graphic style of this painting by the Haitian-artist Gabriel Alix. Those are some nice looking tigers! I spend a lot of time making sure I’m up to date on what is being offered worldwide that might be of interest to my clients. This piece, for example, is being sold in Christie’s upcoming Impressionist and Modern auction in London. With an estimate of $1,850 – 3,000, I’d take a bet that it’s just as handsome in person! If you’re interested in bidding on this piece or would like me to keep my eyes open for something for you, please get in touch!
