Tuesday Under Ten: Pentti Sammallahti

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. Usually my aim is to support emerging artists and young galleries, but Pentti Sammallahti’s work doesn’t fit into either of those categories. He is, in fact, in his late 60s and one of the leading Finnish photographers. However, he keeps his work — usually calm images with often incongruous but not at all cutesy animals — purposefully affordable. I don’t know if that’s reflective of Finnish social welfare or a self-effacing artist, but it makes these beautiful and quietly surprising photographs highly collectible!

Tuesday Under Ten: Paul McDonough

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K to support emerging (or, in this case, less well known) artists and young galleries. This week: I am thrilled Sasha Wolf introduced me to Paul McDonough’s photography. I love these glimpses into the gritty world of 1960/70s New York. As portraits, they are intimate and expressive — the kind of picture you have an ongoing relationship with. My parents met in 1973, so on a personal note, I feel like these are a view into the time and place of their new romance. McDonough is getting on in years, but he’s still involved in printing and signs each piece.

Tuesday Under Ten: Herb Ritts

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: The Klotz Gallery holiday sale is always a favorite! There’s tons of work under $10,000, and even some in the under $100 category! Great for black and white gallery walls or a quirky holiday present. I love this one by Herb Ritts!

Tuesday Under Ten: André Kertész

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: There is nothing I don’t love about this 1926 photograph by André Kertész. The white white body in triplicate, the Art Deco lines, the chiaroscuro, not to mention her shoes — it’s all just perfect. This piece and many more are included in Phillips photograph auction on Thursday. If you’re interested in bidding, please get in touch!

Tuesday Under Ten: Mary Ellen Bartley

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: There's something so summery about this Mary Ellen Bartley photograph for me (beyond the title!) -- like faded and forgotten beach house books. If you're interested, please get in touch!

Tuesday Under Ten: Melanie Willhide

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: Melanie Willhide's Henbane for Honey Bun series combines a luscious blend of women and flowers. Surreal and abstract, the images ask the viewer to question what is real and what is artificial.

Tuesday Under Ten: Ian Ruhter

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: I adore Ian Ruhter's work that marries nineteenth-century photographic techniques with new technology to create collodion wet plate prints of the American West on a scale (as large as 48 x 60 inches) that Ansel Adams never could have imagined!

Tuesday Under Ten: Madonna NYC'83 by Richard Corman

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: If you were a kid in the 80s, I'm certain you'll think these Richard Corman shots of Madonna from 1983 are as amazing as I do. The jelly bracelets! The ripped jeans! This Madonna is still my prototype for cool 35 years later. Shot in New York a month after the Madonna album came out, there are great glimpses of gritty 80s NYC, as well. Each image is printed in four sizes and priced between $2,750 and $9,500 depending on size. Available through July 5 - please get in touch if you're interested!

Tuesday Under Ten: Aaron Siskind

Every Tuesday I post a work of art I love priced under $10K. This week: One of my favorite events of the year is the Klotz Gallery Holiday Sale. Now in its 39th year, this is a fantastic opportunity to pick up holiday presents or black and white photography for a gallery wall. Everything is priced under $10,000, and there are pieces in the under $5,000, $1,000, $500, and $100 categories, too. This little guy was Aaron Siskin's 1960 Christmas Card, and it should feel free to hop right on my wall!
