experience the art world
Whether you’re looking to buy or simply to expand your knowledge of Contemporary art, join me on a visit to a museum or gallery exhibition, auction preview, art fair, or artist’s studio!
Although Manhattan gallery shows are only open for about six weeks at a time, they're often museum quality and always free and open to the public. The primary gallery neighborhoods are Chelsea, the Lower East Side, Fifty-Seventh Street, and the Upper East Side. Since galleries frequently have solo shows, exhibiting an artist's newest body of work, visits are a great way to really get to know a single artist and stay educated on their current production.
There are also three major auction houses in New York that hold Contemporary sales: Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips. Each holds a number of annual auctions for Contemporary art, editioned work (prints), and photographs. The auctions are preceded by preview exhibitions, which are open to the public and a great way to see a range of work by different artists.
New York also hosts two major Contemporary art fairs each spring: The Armory Show in March and Frieze in May. I also love taking my clients to out of town fairs — Miami Basel in December is a highlight of the year. Coinciding with these blue chip fairs are a number of "satellite" fairs, catering to different tastes and budgets. In addition, there are specialized fairs in New York throughout the year for photography, prints, outsider art, and more. At fairs, you get to see a huge amount of work from all over the world under one roof.
